The Truth Matters by Connie Rohman
Fabric is my chosen medium. The texture of my hand-dyed fabrics and sewn lines add unusual character to my art. I have always been fascinated by language, how we use it and how it evolves over time. My Lost Languages/Shorthand series looks at an obsolete visual communication system that is no longer being used in this digital age. In the past, female secretaries had to learn shorthand in order to take dictation from their male bosses. I use Gregg shorthand to capture its flowing script and abstract shaped letters as well as to highlight this lost women’s language. This piece reads “The Truth Matters” in Gregg Shorthand.
Peace, There Is No Peace by BetZ Ross
A stitched allegory of the best and worst of America as it is today, ripped, scarred, patched, mended, and under attack. BetZ Ross has excerpted Patrick Henry’s great appeal and repurposed it for today: “Gentlemen may cry peace, peace, but there is no peace…The war is already begun. Our brethren are already in the field. …Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?…I know not what course others may take but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.” From these word fragments, an oversized, multi-faceted, protest tapestry of embroidery and found objects was made.
A Word By Any Other Name by Heather Hoggan
What’s in a word? One word can denote similar things, or just as easily lead in the opposite direction. This vellum and fabric work depicts the intersection of all things synonymous (maroon) and antonymous (pink) with the word Chaos and, in turn, its many derivatives. Text size is determined by the number of times a particular word or phrase appears in the scenario, and sometimes a word may straddle either side (red).
Searching for that perfect word? There are so many choices.
