Celestial Sentinels / Paintings and Monoprints

September 14, 2019 – October 5, 2019 Why The Tears, Jacque Lene Rogers-Engels

Opening, Saturday September 14, 7 – 10 pm, part of NELA Second Saturday

My artwork for decades has been painting, printing and mask-making. Color, humor, mythology and spirituality have been my overarching themes. I have been influenced by ancient petroglyphs and modern art.
Mondrian, Kandinsky and Miro are three of the most significant artists that have inspired my work. Studying Commedia Dell Art Mask Making in Italy has also provided a backdrop to the paintings and images I choose to work with.
I paint with acrylics because I love the immediacy it provides as well as the means to have pure color depicting the graphic images. I choose to paint in a graphic style so the emotions of the piece can speak more clearly. The monoprints in this show demonstrate how the medium allows me to use a more painterly style as well as incorporating ghosting and mask like images.
Are we not all wearing many masks throughout our lives?
